We offer all the courses you need to achieve your Second and Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency

What are the Entry Requirements?

To undertake the Second and Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency, you will need to:

  1. Have completed 12 months’ seagoing service as an EOOW, III/1, on vessels of at least 750 kW in engine power. This time must include at least 9 months in full charge of the watch or with designated UMS (Unattended Machinery Spaces) duties.
  2. Hold a HND/Advanced Diploma or Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering with pass of at least 50% in each academic subject. 
  3. Hold a transcript or college Education and Training (E&T) letter confirming your results.
Further requirements
  1. All certificates and E&T letter must have been achieved before applying for Certificate of Competency as per MSN 1857.
  2. Students already in possession of an E&T letter from the college at which they completed the HND/Advanced Diploma or Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering will require no further HND/Advanced Diploma units.
  3. Transcripts of qualifications with the evidence of 50% pass mark in each subject must be produced before advice and guidance can be given.
  4. Students without a full HND/Advanced Diploma but who have completed most of the units may be able to enrol and complete their certificate by registering with SQA and completing the outstanding units. This can be done remotely via our Blended Learning Unit.
