Student Spotlight- Stephen (Blended Learning)
Published on 10/12/2024 by CMCKE
Read about Stephen's decision to study for Chief Mate (Unlimited) by blended learning from work aboard a superyacht and his home in Australia, plus his unconventional upbringing which prepared him for a career at sea.
Why did you decide to study by Blended Learning at FNC and what did you study?
I studied the Chief Mate (Unlimited) Blended Learning course. I chose blended learning at FNC because of the flexibility, allowing me to work and spend time with my family outside of the UK (I live in Australia).
What had you previously studied, when and where?
I completed the OOW (Unlimited) experienced seafarer route at Warsash in 2019.
Tell us about the roles you've had at sea - where you've been and what you've seen and done
I started on superyachts as a deckhand in 2010. I’ve worked on yachts mainly between the 80-100m range, most of which have involved world cruising itineraries.
Highlights would be some pretty extensive cruising through Indonesia and diving in Raja Ampat, cruising Patagonia, and surfing in French Polynesia.
Through the years I climbed the ranks, became an officer after gaining the OOW 3000GT license in 2015, then set my sights on the unlimited route due to the increasing demand for commercial licenses in the superyacht industry.
Why was the Merchant Navy your choice of career?
I grew up living on board a 45ft sailboat built by my parents. We lived on board full time cruising Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. It’s always been a central part of my life, and I’ve never looked back.
How did you find studying by Blended Learning?
The flexibility was great. I was able to plan my weeks and set my own goals, making it fit to my working and family life. Not having access to a physical library was a bit inconvenient at times, however the online resources were helpful.
What did you learn that has had the most impact/you got the most out of?
Realising how much I had forgotten since OOW Unlimited. It was a huge wake up call to never stop learning when on the job and take the opportunity as a senior officer to build an environment on board that encourages all crew to keep progressing and building themselves.
What are you doing now and what are your career ambitions?
I’m currently working as Chief Officer on a new build in Holland. The yacht is 111m, around 5000GT, launching in 2025.
What would you say to anyone thinking studying by Blended Learning at FNC?
Weigh up the pros and cons. The Blended learning course can be completed in a reasonable amount of time if you really commit. The Blended Learning Team are fantastic, and you will receive their full support. I felt like a part of the college culture, even without stepping foot on site. If you undertake the Blended Learning course, it really helps if you connect with other students for support and motivation. Many thanks to FNC and the Blended Learning Team.
