We are delighted and extremely proud to announce that Fleetwood Nautical Campus Nautical Science alumnus Katie Jayne McGahan Hargreaves has been selected by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency as the MCA Officer Trainee of the Year for 2023.
Katie was presented with her award at the UK Chamber of Shipping's Annual Dinner on Monday 5 February, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
The judges noted that Katie is an excellent all-rounder, successful in both her academic and professional progress. They commented on her demonstrable and well-developed strengths including teamwork and leadership skills, and her influence on and encouragement of her college peers, whilst remaining dedicated to her own studies.
The panel found Katie to be diligent, using good social skills in the challenging atmosphere of a ship, keenly showing that she is willing to learn from her colleagues on board ship. They also highlighted that outside college and sea time, Katie is an excellent role model, keen to promote her career choice, concluding that she will show the industry in the best light for future generations.
Captain Neil Atkinson, Head of Fleetwood Nautical Campus said:
"All of the staff at Fleetwood Nautical Campus are absolutely delighted that Katie has been selected as the MCA Trainee Officer of the Year winner for 2023.
Katie is a true role model for other trainee officers to look up to as they develop through their training programme and then into their first role as an Officer.
Whilst being so focused on her own personal development she has also been an outstanding ambassador for the maritime industry.
I wish her well for what I am sure will be a very rewarding career".
This is the 10th time in 17 years that a Fleetwood officer cadet has won this prestigious award, so credit also to our hardworking, dedicated team from across the college who support our students in all aspects of their cadetship.
