Course Overview

Refresh your fire awareness training for working in the wind turbine industry. This GWO course forms part of a package, designed to provide basic safety refresher training, essential for careers in this field. Through a combination of theory and practical training, you will refresh the knowledge and skills needed to prevent fires, make appropriate judgment when evaluating a fire, manage the safe evacuation of personnel, and, if it is judged to be safe, efficiently extinguish a fire using hand-held firefighting equipment.

All GWO courses require you to register on the GWO WINDA database prior to arrival.

Entry Requirements

Delegates must hold a valid and in-date GWO Fire Awareness Certificate.

GWO certificates must be renewed by undertaking the relevant refresher training course prior to, and inclusive of, the expiry date stated on the specific training certificate. Where the expiry date has been exceeded, the delegate must complete the relevant initial training course in order to be re-certified.

Completion of the GWO Basic Safety training package is essential for those working in the wind turbine industry.

Assessment Methods

On successful completion of the GWO Fire Awareness Refresher, you will be able to:  

  • demonstrate knowledge of the development and spread of fire 
  • demonstrate knowledge of the causes of fires in wind turbines and the dangers related  to these  
  • identify any sign of a fire in a wind turbine environment  
  • demonstrate knowledge of the contingency plans in a wind turbine environment, including smoke detection and emergency escape procedures  
  • demonstrate correct actions on discovering a fire, including correct operation and fire extinguishing by means of the fire-fighting equipment in a wind turbine generator (WTG) 

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course consists of 40% theory and 60% practical learning.

Industry Placement and Field Trips

This course has no industry placement and no field trips.

All the equipment/resources you need for this course are provided by B&FC at no extra cost.
