Course Overview
Learn to apply immediate first aid on board a ship with the 4-day Medical First Aid course. Intended for seafarers who are designated to provide on-board medical first aid, the course provides knowledge of the general construction and function of various parts of the human body. Specifically, you will learn how to apply immediate first aid in the event of illness on board. Assessment will be carried out via a written test, direct observation, oral questioning and simulated scenarios.
Important course information
In order to comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy courses must provide a seaman’s discharge book, passport or driving licence when attending the centre. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to a delay in the issue of your certificate.
Validity of certificate
There is no expiry date on this certificate.
Medical declaration
Parts of the course are of a physical nature. You will be required to complete a medical declaration when you attend your course.
Entry Requirements
Trainees must be at least 16 years of age to do this course. There are no pre-requisites in terms of prior training.
Trainees who hold a certificate in Elementary First Aid, issued in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code (or an equivalent qualification recognised by the MCA), must undertake this training in full in order to update and extend their knowledge and skills relating to current medical first aid procedures.
Assessment Methods
The course covers the following topics:
- general construction and functions of various parts of the body
- medical stores carried on board
- general principles for dealing with accidents and other emergencies, using environment and guides available on board
- principles related to pharmacology and the application of immediate first aid, in the event of accident or illness on board
Teaching and Learning Methods
This course is equally balanced between theoretical and practical learning.
Industry Placement and Field Trips
This course has no industry placement and no field trips.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
There are no additional costs. The majority of the course is of a hands-on, practical nature. For theory sessions the dress code is smart/casual gear.
You will also need to bring:
- writing materials
- photographic proof of identity eg passport/driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)
- evidence of any First Aid certificates you may have already obtained
