Course Overview
Gain basic first aid proficiency for use at sea with the STCW Elementary First Aid (EFA) course. Learn about the immediate action you would need to take upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency on board ship. Assessment is carried out via direct observation, oral questioning and simulated scenarios.
Important course information
To comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy courses must provide a seaman’s discharge book, passport or driving licence when attending the centre. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to a delay in the issue of your certificate.
Validity of certificate
5 years.
Medical declaration
Attention is drawn to the fact that parts of the course are of a physical nature. You will be required to complete a medical declaration when you attend your course.

- Control of Bleeding
- Basic Shock Management
- Improvised Bandages
- Use of Materials in a First Aid Kit
Teaching and Learning Methods
The Elementary First Aid is a class-based 1-day course with interactive exercises.
Industry Placement and Field Trips
This course has no industry placement and no field trips.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
There are no additional costs. The majority of the course is of a hands-on practical nature, with a smart/casual dress code.
You will also need to bring writing materials and photographic proof of your identity, such as a passport or UK driving licence (compulsory to attend the course).
