Course Overview
Update your firefighting knowledge and skills to an advanced level with this STCW course. The course gives all those seeking to update their training certification with the essential education and training set out in Table A-VI/3. Assessment will be carried out via direct observation, oral questioning, simulated scenarios and a written examination.
Important course information
In order to comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy courses must provide a seaman’s discharge book, passport or driving licence when attending the centre. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to a delay in the issue of certificates.
Validity of certificate
5 years
Medical declaration
Attention is drawn to the fact that parts of the course are of a physical nature. You will be required to complete a medical declaration when you attend your course.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must hold a current STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate. You must bring evidence of this, which can be:
- the original certificate
- a certified stamp of completion in your discharge book
- an Officer of the Watch (OOW) or higher Certificate of Competency (COC).
Those wishing to reduce the training time using a Route 1 self-declaration for onboard training requirement (form Annex E) must have completed and signed this at the start of the course. This declaration comprises:
- control of firefighting operations onboard
- firefighting procedures at sea and in port
- communication and coordination
- ventilation control
- control of fuel and electrical systems
- firefighting process hazards
- fire precautions associated with IMDG goods
- management and control of injured persons
- coordination with shore-based firefighters
If this self declaration cannot be made, delegates will need to complete the whole day.
Assessment Methods
Following successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- control firefighting operations aboard ship
- organise and train fire parties
- inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment
- investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire
Teaching and Learning Methods
This 1 day Advanced Fire Fighting Updating course is entirely classroom based.
Industry Placement and Field Trips
This course has no industry placement and no field trips.

There are no additional costs for this course. The dress code is smart/casual and you will also need to bring:
- writing materials
- photographic proof of your identity, such as a passport or UK driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)
