Course Overview
Update your knowledge of Personal Survival Techniques with this one day STCW MCA approved revalidation course. Under the STCW 2010 requirements for training and certification, updated proficiency training in Personal Survival Techniques needs to be undertaken every five years.
This course provides all those seeking to update their training certification with the essential education and training set out in Table A-VI/1-1.Training consists primarily of exercises in our Environmental Training Tank, with assessment carried out by direct observation, oral questioning and simulated scenarios.
Validity of certificate
This certificate is valid for 5 years from date of issue.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must have previously completed an STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) or Basic Training for Seafarers (BTFS) course. You must bring evidence of your PST to the course, which can be:
- the original certificate
- a certified stamp of completion in your discharge book
- an Able Seafarers Certificate of Competence
- an Officer of the Watch (OOW) or higher Certificate of Competency (COC).
Route 2 PST is for delegates who have not completed any onboard training over the previous five years and cannot declare for Route 1. Please check the Route 1 webpage for more information.
Assessment Methods
Following successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- correctly don and use an immersion suit
- step from a height into the water
- swim while wearing a life jacket
- right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket
- stay afloat without a life jacket
- board a survival craft from the water when wearing a life jacket
Teaching and Learning Methods
The PST Updating comprises an equal balance of theory-based training and practical exercises in the environmental training pool.
Industry Placement and Field Trips
This course has no industry placement and no field trips.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
There are no additional costs. Most of the course is of a hands-on, practical nature. For theory sessions the dress code is smart/casual.
You will also need to bring:
- swimwear and a towel
- a personal wash kit
- if your shoe size is smaller than 4 or greater than 12 – a clean pair of old trainers that you’re prepared to get wet
- photographic proof of your identity eg passport/driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)
