This course provides an opportunity for Coxwains to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in practical situations, which cannot reasonably be practised offshore. This course is offered with the option of twin, single fall or combined fall training. If you are in doubt as to which you need, please check with the Rig Operator or call us to discuss on 01253 504800.
This course is OPITO approved and is valid for UK waters and areas where OPITO courses are accepted.
You must bring your current certificate as proof of eligibility, or other appropriate evidence ie Vantage print-out, when you attend the course. The evidence must show the expiry date of your current certificate, which needs to be in date (or you may not be able to undertake refresher training, which could result in having to transfer to a Basic Coxswains course at a later date).
It is your responsibility to provide such evidence. Please contact us if you are unsure of the validity of your previous training.
Delegates are required to specify which training they require i.e. twin-fall or twin-fall with single fall conversion.
Validity of certificate
Two years, including OPITO registration. The certificate must be revalidated before the expiry date or up to three months before (incurring no loss of time on the new certificate start).
You must be in possession of a current in-date Basic Offshore and Emergency Training (BOSIET) certificate or an in-date Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) certificate.
You must also hold an in-date Offshore Lifeboat (TEMPSC) Coxswains Basic/Further Training Certificate.
The course covers the following topics:
- Launch and Recovery
- Moving TEMPSC to a Safe Area
- TEMPSC Transfer and Pacing
- Man Overboard
- Use of Sea Anchor
Assessment is carried out via a practical as well as continuous observation of competence.
Teaching and Learning Methods
This eight hour course is an entirely practical-based course, afloat on lifeboats.
Industry Placement and Field Trips
This course has no work placements and no field trips.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
The majority of the course is of a hands-on, practical nature. For theory sessions the dress code is smart/casual gear.
You will also need to bring:
- cotton overalls
- a change of warm clothing
- a pair of safety shoes/rig boots
- wet weather gear
- a personal wash kit
- photographic proof of identity eg passport/driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)
All staff involved in the delivery of any courses within the College are approved to teach and/or assess the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering and/or assessing a given programme are appropriately qualified, with relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.
