Course Overview

Gain proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) operation with this STCW course. Intended for seafarers who are required to take charge of FRB, the course provides knowledge of the type and construction of fast rescue boats and associated equipment. Delegates will learn how to take charge of FRBs during launch and recovery, participate in all aspects of rescue and care of casualties from the water, and operate FRB engines. Assessment is by direct observation and oral questioning.

Important course information

In order to comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy Courses must provide a Seaman’s Discharge Book, Passport or Driving Licence when attending the centre. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to a delay in the issue of Certificates

Validity of certificate

There is no expiry date on this certificate. 

Medical declaration

Attention is drawn to the fact that parts of the course are of a physical nature. You will be required to complete a medical declaration when you attend your course.

Entry Requirements

Before embarking on this course you must be in possession of a valid Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats) and be at least 18 years old.

Career Options and Progression

The STCW FRB course is a required certificate for vessels carrying FRBs and may be a requirement of your employment (or increase your employability). 

Assessment Methods

Following successful completion of the course, you will:

  • understand the construction, maintenance, repair and outfitting of fast rescue boats
  • be able to take charge of the launching equipment and appliance as commonly fitted, during launching and recovery
  • be able to take charge of a fast rescue boat as commonly fitted, during launching and recovery
  • be able to take charge of a fast rescue boat after launching
  • be able to operate a fast rescue boat engine

Teaching and Learning Methods

This 3-day course is equally balanced between class-based theory and practical learning in the environmental training pool. 

Industry Placement and Field Trips

This course has no industry placement and no field trips.  

Other Costs and Equipment Needed

There are no additional costs. The majority of the course is of a hands-on, practical nature. For theory sessions the dress code is smart/casual gear.   

You will also need to bring:   

  • a change of clothes   
  • waterproof clothing (the College does have a limited supply or you are welcome to bring your own)  
  • Safety boots/Wellingtons  
  • cotton overalls (the College does have a limited supply or you are welcome to bring your own)  
  • a personal wash kit   
  • swimwear and a towel   
  • if your shoe size is smaller than 4 or greater than 12 – a clean pair of old trainers that you’re prepared to get wet   
  • photographic proof of identity eg passport/driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)  
  • your valid Certificate of STCW95 Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats)
