Course Overview

Develop personal survival techniques for working at sea with this one-day MCA approved course. Gain essential basic knowledge of survival equipment, survival principles and techniques that can be applied to maximise your chances of survival in the event of a marine incident. Training combines class-based theory with practical exercises in our Environmental Training Tank. Assessment is by direct observation, oral questioning and simulated scenarios.  

Important course information

To comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy courses must provide a seaman’s discharge book, passport or driving licence when attending the centre.

Validity of certificate

5 years.

Medical declaration

Parts of the course are of a physical nature. You will be required to complete a medical declaration when you attend your course.

The Personal Survival Techniques course can be completed as part of the Basic Training for Seafarer’s course (reducing the overall price).

This course comprises an equal balance of theory and practical learning.

Industry Placement and Field Trips

This course has no industry placement and no field trips.

You will need to bring:  

  • writing materials  
  • towel and wash kit  
  • photographic proof of identity, such as passport or UK driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)
