‘Fitness to Train’ for In-Water CA-EBS Training

If you are attending offshore survival training that includes in-water Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) exercises, you must provide evidence that you are medically fit to undertake the training.

What has changed?

Under revised OEUK guidance introduced in November 2025, Fitness to Train (FTT) assessments completed alongside an OEUK offshore medical now have an expiry date linked to the validity of the medical certificate. Previously, FTT certificates did not have an expiry date. 

What do I need for training?

Before attending a course involving in-water CA-EBS exercises, you must hold one of the following valid documents at the time of training:

1. Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) Medical and OEUK fitness to undertake ‘in water’ CA-EBS training certificate (available at the time of the medical) or

2. An unexpired medical certificate to work at sea (e.g. ENG1) without restrictions or

3. Valid Approved Medical Examiner of Diving (AMED) Medical 

Important

All medical and fitness-to-train documentation must be valid on the day of training. Delegates are responsible for ensuring that all certificates remain current and have not expired before attending the course. 

• Fitness to Train assessments completed alongside an OEUK Medical after November 2025 will normally expire on the same date as the associated OEUK Medical certificate, which is typically valid for two years unless a shorter validity period has been specified by the examining doctor. 
• Where a delegate holds a Fitness to Train certificate issued before November 2025 that does not show an expiry date, it may continue to be accepted in accordance with current OEUK guidance and medical certification requirements. 

Delegates who are unsure of their status should seek advice before attending training.

Prior to the in-water CA-EBS training delegates are required to:

• Complete a medical declaration and
• Self-declaration of fitness to undertake in water CA-EBS

Delegates who do not provide an Offshore Energies UK medical or a ‘Fit’/’Not fit’ for in water CA-EBS certificate or cannot self-declare fitness on the day due to illness have 90 days to return to the training centre to complete the in-water elements of the CA-EBS training.
