Course Overview

This course is mandatory for those wishing to serve on liquefied gas tankers in the capacity of Master, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer, Second Engineer, or any person with immediate responsibility for loading, discharging or care in transit of liquefied gas cargoes.

You will gain comprehensive training in all aspects of liquefied gas tanker operations at the advanced level.

Completion of this course will enable you to understand the correct use all forms of on-board cargo handling equipment and effectively access sources of essential safety and operational information.

The course is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) against the standards set by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Entry Requirements

Delegates must have completed the following, 

  1. Basic training for Liquefied Gas Cargo operations 
  1. Tanker Firefighting course

Career Options and Progression

This qualification will enable you to progress to Master, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer or Second Engineer.

Assessment Methods

The training consists of 9 modules covering theory and practice:

  • Properties of liquefied gas cargoes, ship construction and design features 
  • Gas Tanker operations: loading, carriage, discharging, loss control, tank cleaning, inspections
  • Unique operations: tank conditioning, reliquefication, cargo conditioning, cargo heating and vaporizing, etc. 
  • Hazards associated with liquefied cargo handling, and risk control measures
  • Emergency shut down procedures, ESD cause and effects, and dealing with emergencies
  • Cargo measurements and calculations
  • Development and execution of cargo plans considering trim, stability and structural integrity
  • Calibration and use of gas detection systems and other instrumentation
  • Precautions and best practices to observe during cargo operations and carriage
     

Assessment is by open book examination at the end of each day, a final summative closed book assessment, and demonstration of proficiency in simulated exercises.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course is delivered as a series of related theory lectures, video presentations and both individual and group, desktop and simulator based student exercises. A comprehensive set of course notes and handouts is provided, as is access to a range of mandatory publications.

Industry Placement and Field Trips

There is no work placement or field trips as part of this qualification.

Accommodation, transfers and meals are not provided within this course.
