Course Overview

This course prepares you for the Chief Mate Certificate of Competency (CoC) written examinations.

These exams are in the subjects of Ship Stability and Navigation and both are administered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) on behalf of the MCA.

The course is part of a suite of qualifications that make up the Chief Mate CoC and are designed to develop the higher management skills necessary to perform on board a vessel in a senior role.

This course is available in one term and two term timescales. 

Entry Requirements

HND, Advanced Diploma or Foundation Degree in Nautical Science.

Career Options and Progression

Successful completion of this course enables you to progress towards obtaining a UK Chief Mate Unlimited II/2 Certificate of Competency (CoC) of a merchant vessel.

Achieving the Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency leads to employment as a Chief Officer in the Merchant Navy, responsible for operating and managing commercial ships.

A range of shore-based opportunities are also available, in ship management and in areas such as maritime law, ship surveying, and maritime education and training.

Assessment Methods

You will study two subjects; Ship Stability and Navigation, which meet the internationally agreed Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Formative assessments are undertaken to measure progress, with the final assessment an externally set examination by the MCA and administered by the SQA.

Teaching and Learning Methods

All teaching and learning is performed within a classroom based environment through a selection of worked examples and recap of HND/AdD/FD associated topics.

Industry Placement and Field Trips

There are no industry placements or field trips.

Other Costs and Equipment Needed

You will need technical equipment for navigation and stability such as parallel ruler, dividers and scientific calculator.

 You will need a laptop or tablet to access resources for this course.
