Read about Simon's experience of studying for Chief Mate (Unlimited) by blended learning and how this allowed him the flexibility to balance work, family life and studies.

Why did you decide to study by Blended Learning at FNC and what did you study?

The flexibility of blended learning allowed me to keep working so I could still earn and gain sea time.  I studied the Chief Mate (Unlimited) via blended learning.

What had you previously studied, when and where?

Since I've only worked on yachts, I went via the experienced seafarer route for OOW Unlimited. Prior to that I had just finished the Master 3000 but want to open more doors by not being limited to the size of vessel and this paid off immediately.

Tell us about the roles you've had at sea - where you've been and what you've seen and done

I've worked on several large yachts as an officer. Four of these were new build projects which I saw through to launch and operation. During my time at sea, I've travelled most of the Mediterranean and Caribbean, as well as some trips further afield to Maldives, Thailand and Australia which was a great experience.

Why was the Merchant Navy your choice of career?

When I started maritime studies I had no idea about doing the experienced seafarer route, I thought I'd have to undertake a full cadetship which wasn't feasible for me, so I stuck to the yacht 3000 syllabus. I thought I’d need to take lots of time out to complete the Chief Mate Unlimited, but once I discovered blended learning with Fleetwood Nautical, I knew this would allow me the flexibility to balance work, family life and studies.

How did you find studying by Blended Learning?

I found the whole process relatively stress free. The flexibility of Blended learning really takes the pressure off. You work as hard as you want, when you want, it just depends how quickly you want to get through it all. Being full remote (beside the exams) saved me so much time and money in travel and accommodation. It a great option for someone who's got commitments that require flexibility but can manage their time carefully.

What did you learn that has had the most impact/you got the most out of?

The operation of commercial vessels, and the emphasis that is put on bridge operations and bridge team management from a management aspect. I touched on this in the yacht 3000 syllabus but not as in-depth.

What are you doing now and what are your career ambitions?

I'd like to get onto another new build vessel with my newly acquired knowledge and be heavily involved with setup and formation of the safety and social culture onboard, I'd hope to help create something special, where seafarers enjoy and appreciate being part of the crew there. We're definitely in an age now where we need to recognise the need to balance hard work and safety with mental wellbeing. That's important to me.

What would you say to anyone thinking studying by Blended Learning at FNC?

Go for it, don't hesitate! It not scary, just manage your time properly, set goals and stick to them.
