When did you begin your studies at Fleetwood Nautical Campus?

I started my Blended Learning at FNC in July 2023 and I studied Chief Mates Unlimited.

What had you previously studied, when and where?

I hold 2nd Mate Unlimited CoC from India which was achieved in 2016. I am BSc Nautical Science Graduate from India too.

Tell us about the roles you've had at sea...

I started my career at sea as a Deck cadet on car carriers and bulk carriers from 2012. In 2016 after getting my 2nd Mate Unlimited CoC, I immediately joined as a 3rd officer in the same year. I continued to work onborad different types of bulk carriers and in early 2020 I was promoted as a 2nd Officer. I worked on Bulk Container vessels as a 2nd officer.

In 2022 I joined TfL's Woolwich Ferry in London as a Mate. After clearing my PEC orals, practical assessments, I went on to achieve BML too. After 10 months, I was promoted as a Captain at Woolwich Ferry, where I still continue to work.

How did you find studying by Blended Learning?

It is a very good option for those who wish to complete the course while continuing to work onboard. At the beginning of the course, I felt it was a bit overwhelming and demanding. However, as time went on, it became much easier to manage. That said, a good amount of self-effort is required since we are studying independently. The positive aspect is that the faculty members and administrative staff are very supportive and approachable, making it easy to get doubts clarified. In addition, there are plenty of online resources available for reference.

Which parts of your course did you find most beneficial?

Completing the FAs and SAs was challenging, but I learned a great deal by referring to multiple resources.

What are you doing now and what are your career ambitions?

I currently work as a Captain at Woolwich Ferry. My ambition is to achieve my Chief Mates Unlimited CoC followed by Master’s Unlimited CoC.

What would you say to anyone thinking studying by Blended Learning at FNC?

I would say it is the best option if they are looking forward to study while continue working.

I would like to sincerely thank Katrina, Sandra, Amrutha, Barry Hope, and Phil Ashton for the guidance, and support provided throughout my course. From start to finish, the experience was well organised, supportive, and genuinely motivating. I’m grateful to the entire team at Fleetwood Nautical College for making the learning journey both professional and enjoyable.

My journey at Fleetwood Nautical College was a bit more special because of an unexpected personal connection. Discovering that Amrutha is the daughter of one of my favourite school teachers from India was a true “such a small world” moment for me. Years later and far from home, it was both surprising and quite amusing to find myself being taught by the daughter of someone who once taught me back at school. It’s a connection I’ll always remember and one that added something genuinely unique to my time at FNC.
