Why did you decide to study by Blended Learning at FNC and what did you study?

I chose Blended Learning at Fleetwood Nautical Campus as it provided the flexibility required to continue working at sea while studying. Due to financial and professional commitments, extended periods away from work were not feasible. The Blended Learning structure allowed courses and examinations to be arranged around my leave periods and the continued support from the Blended Learning team ensured a smooth and effective learning experience.

What had you previously studied, when and where?

I have completed my OOW- Unlimited in Nautical Science from Lowestoft College (St Peter's St, Lowestoft NR32 2NB, United Kingdom).

Tell us about the roles you've had at sea...

I have extensive offshore seagoing experience across Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS), Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) and DP-2 Saturation Diving Support Vessels, predominantly within the offshore Oil and Gas sector. My operational background includes Inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) and offshore installation projects, supporting complex subsea and saturation diving operations.

For a significant period, I have been serving as Second Officer and certified Senior / Dynamic Positioning Operator (SDPO / DPO) on board a DP-2 MRV & Saturation Diving Support Vessel operating in the Arabian Gulf. In this role, I am responsible for ensuring safe and efficient DP and marine operations by maintaining strict compliance with the vessel’s Safety Management System, DP Operations Manual and client requirements.

I actively contribute to safe and efficient operations by participating in risk assessments, toolbox talks and bridge team management, while maintaining close coordination with the Master, Diving Superintendent, Client and project personnel. Working in high-risk offshore environments has strengthened my situational awareness, decision-making abilities and strong commitment to safety and operational excellence during critical offshore activities.

Why was the Merchant Navy your choice of career?

I chose the Merchant Navy because it offers a stable and respected career with excellent opportunities for financial security, which allows me to support my family and community. Coming from a village, it also gives me the chance to travel the world, gain international exposure and develop discipline, leadership and technical skills that contribute to my personal and professional growth.

How did you find studying by Blended Learning?

I found studying through Blended Learning at Fleetwood Nautical Campus to be highly effective and flexible. It allowed me to continue working at sea while pursuing my Chief mate - Unlimited qualification. The structure enabled me to plan my studies and examinations around my leave periods and the Blended Learning team at FNC provided excellent support, making the entire process manageable and efficient.

Which parts of your course did you find most beneficial?

I found every subject I studied to be valuable, as each one helped me grow professionally and build the skills I need for my career. I especially benefited from the practical knowledge of navigation, stability and safety management, which I have been able to apply directly during my work at sea, improving both my confidence and effectiveness on board.

What are you doing now and what are your career ambitions?

I am currently employed as a Second Officer / certified Dynamic Positioning Operator on DP-2 Saturation Diving Support Vessels, where I continue to strengthen my navigational, DP and operational capabilities. My long-term career objective is to advance to the rank of Master in due course, while further developing my expertise in offshore marine operations and dynamic positioning. I am committed to continuous professional development and acquiring the leadership experience necessary to safely and effectively manage vessels and complex offshore operations at a senior level.

What would you say to anyone thinking studying by Blended Learning at FNC?

I would highly recommend Blended Learning at FNC to anyone considering it. The programme is well organised and supported by high-quality learning materials and experienced tutors, making it both effective and manageable. The flexibility it offers is ideal for seafarers, as it allows you to continue working at sea while progressing your qualifications. It is an excellent option for anyone looking to develop professionally without interrupting their career. I am very thankful to FNC and the teaching staff for their ongoing support throughout my studies. The Blended Learning format allowed me to successfully balance my work at sea with my academic responsibilities and it has equipped me with valuable knowledge and skills that I will continue to apply as I progress in my maritime career.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Katrina and the entire Blended Learning team. Their dedication, support and hard work in organising courses and examinations made a significant difference to my studies. I genuinely do not think I could have completed the programme without their help and I am very appreciative of the effort they put into supporting all Blended Learning students.
