Read Bilal's thoughts on his Blended Learning Journey:
From working at sea while studying to progressing towards Officer of the Watch, Bilal shares how Blended Learning supported his ambitions, shaped his career, and helped him achieve his goals in the Merchant Navy.
Why did you decide to study by Blended Learning at FNC and what did you study?
I was working with different shipping companies to complete my sea service for OOW. At the same time, I was not able to work, study, and fund my education through traditional routes. I discovered the FNC Blended Learning programme on social media, and it felt like a dream come true. It gave me a clear pathway to join the FNC Blended Learning OOW preparation courses, allowing me to continue my job at sea while working towards becoming an Officer of the Watch.
What had you previously studied, when and where?
I completed my Diploma of Associate Engineering in Mechanical Technology in 2017. During my diploma, I received an offer from Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works. This is where I decided to join the deck department and obtained my Seafarer Service Book as an Ordinary Seafarer, to explore something new. That experience sparked my ambition to become an Officer of the Watch on deck.
Tell us about the roles you've had at sea – where you've been and what you've seen and done
I worked as an Ordinary Seafarer, where I learned many essential onboard skills. These included vessel maintenance, navigational watchkeeping, chart work, communication, and risk management. During my sea time, I also had the opportunity to travel the world, experience different cultures, and work alongside people from many different nationalities.
Why was the Merchant Navy your choice of career?
Being a Merchant Navy seafarer comes with a huge level of responsibility at a young age, which I believe is rare in shore-based roles. One of the most amazing aspects is learning directly from senior officers. With crew members in different positions working under one roof, I was able to learn a wide range of skills and apply them through hands-on, practical experience.
How did you find studying by Blended Learning?
Personally, the structure of FNC’s online materials is very well designed for blended learners. It allowed me to study efficiently and manage my time effectively. I found the learning process enjoyable, which helped me complete my studies in a shorter time span.
What did you learn that has had the most impact / you got the most out of?
I learned how to maintain safety onboard, which has had the biggest impact on my role. My junior crew appreciate what I teach them, as they believe I have completed my maritime education at one of the best nautical schools in the UK.
What are you doing now and what are your career ambitions?
I am currently working as a Dredge Mate with the NMDC Group in the UAE, which owns a large fleet of vessels. The company is ready to welcome me as an Officer of the Watch as soon as I obtain my Certificate of Competency (CoC).
What would you say to anyone thinking about studying by Blended Learning at FNC?
I would advise them to choose Blended Learning at FNC. The study materials are designed to support self‑study, and the instructors are always ready and happy to help. It’s a win‑win.
