Meet Alana Cahoon – Phase 3 BSc Nautical Science (Deck), Sponsored by James Fisher

To mark International Women’s Day, Fleetwood Nautical Campus is proud to highlight Alana Cahoon, a Phase 3 student on the BSc Nautical Science (Deck) programme, sponsored by James Fisher. Alana’s journey into maritime is driven by ambition, resilience and a determination to challenge traditional perceptions of the industry.

Alana was drawn to a seafaring career by the clear progression routes, the opportunity to travel, and the fact that no two days are ever the same. “I wanted a career with clear routes of progression that wasn’t a typical 9-5 and allowed me to travel,” she explains.

While Alana does not have family in the Merchant Navy, her respect for the sea began early. Growing up, her father volunteered with the RNLI Lough Neagh Rescue, instilling in her a deep appreciation for the water and those who work on it.

Life at Sea and Learning on the Job

During her sea phase, Alana has spent a total of four months on board three coastal oil tankers: Corrib Fisher, Solway Fisher and Seniority. These vessels transported cargos including machine lubrication oil, diesel, kerosene and jet fuel, operating predominantly around the UK and Northern Europe.

Her time at sea has taken her to ports across the UK, from Fawley to Inverness – as well as to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Throughout her placements, Alana has gained hands-on experience in navigation, cargo operations, and general ship maintenance.

One standout moment remains particularly memorable:
“My personal highlight was getting to hand steer the ship on the River Seine. The landscape was beautiful and it was a fantastic learning experience.”

The Importance of Communication

For Alana, one of the most critical skills in the maritime industry is communication.

“You are constantly exchanging information with other bridge team and crew members, VTS, pilots and port staff. It’s essential that you can communicate clearly and understand any instructions or information.”

She also highlights the importance of confidence - being able to ask for help and raise concerns when needed. “Maritime is such a collaborative industry and without strong and confident communication it wouldn’t be possible.”

Challenges as a Woman at Sea

Working on oil tankers has not been without its challenges. On every vessel, Alana has been the only female on board, with most crew members at least ten years her senior.

“It can feel quite isolating at times, but you have to insert yourself to get the most out of your time at sea.”

Alana is open about facing moments of negativity and sexism, as well as having her abilities underestimated. By addressing concerns directly with the captain, she ensured she received the same learning opportunities as her colleagues and made the most of her sea time.

Looking Ahead

Looking to the future, Alana has clear ambitions.

“In five to ten years’ time I would like to have obtained my Chief Mates.”

She is aware that James Fisher has never had a female Chief Officer, and sees this not as a barrier, but as motivation.

“I like the idea of that being a challenge for me to work towards. It would be fantastic to be the first.”

Alana plans to remain within the oil and gas sector of the maritime industry, building her career at sea.

Advice for the Next Generation

Her advice to other women considering a maritime career is clear and empowering:

“Don’t let anyone doubt or underestimate you. More traditional, older seafarers won’t be used to having females on board, and it’s important that you get the same opportunities as your male colleagues. You are every bit as capable as any man within the industry.”

On this International Women’s Day, Alana’s story highlights the determination, professionalism and ambition of women shaping the future of maritime, both at Fleetwood Nautical Campus and across the industry.
