Course Overview
This one day course refreshes your knowledge and skills relating to working at height on and self-rescue from a wind turbine. Combining theoretical and practical training, this course will recertify you to work safely at height in the wind turbine industry/wind turbine generator (WTG) environment. The course also encourages positive manual handling and ergonomic behaviour and enable participants to perform manual handling tasks in a safe manner.
This course is for regular climbers in the wind turbine industry wanting to refresh their existing in-date GWO certificates.
Validity of certificate
2 years. GWO certificates must be renewed by undertaking the relevant refresher training course prior to, and inclusive of, the expiry date stated on the specific training certificate. Where the expiry date has been exceeded, you must complete the relevant initial training course in order to be re-certified.
GWO certificates can be renewed up to two months prior to the original certificate’s expiry date in order to maintain the original certification. If a certificate is renewed beyond 2 months prior to the expiry date stated on the training certificate, the re-issued certificate will carry an expiry date of 24 months from the date of course completion.
Medical declaration
Parts of the course are of a physical nature - including the requirement to climb a 16m vertical ladder. Employers must ensure participants are medically fit to attend training. participants will need to complete a medical declaration when they attend the course.

Entry Requirements
Participants must hold a valid and in-date GWO Working at Height Certificate and be registered as a participant on the GWO WINDA database prior to arrival. Registration is free. Visit the Global Wind Safety website and complete the relevant fields.
You will need to bring your WINDA ID to all booked training courses.

- Equipment selection and inspection
- Safe systems of work
- Permits
- Emergency procedures
- Self rescue
- Evacuation
- Manual Handling: risk controls and proper manual handling techniques
Industry Placement and Field Trips
This course has no industry placement and no field trips.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
Most of the course is of a hands-on, practical nature. For theory sessions the dress code is smart/casual.
You will also need to bring:
- sturdy footwear
- warm clothing
- waterproof clothing
- suitable gloves for ladder climbing
- photographic proof of identity eg passport/driving licence (compulsory to attend the course)
- your in-date GWO certificates
