Entry Requirements
This is a regulated occupation overseen by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Applicants must meet specific criteria to ensure they can safely undertake the training and operational duties required of a Ship's Master.
Age Requirement Applicants must be aged 18 or over at the start of the apprenticeship. To obtain the Master Certificate of Competency, candidates must be at least 20 years of age with the required sea service.
English and Maths Apprentices must hold or achieve Level 2 English and mathematics qualifications prior to undertaking the End-Point Assessment. Applicants without these qualifications can work towards them during the apprenticeship.
Medical Fitness Applicants must meet the MCA seafarer medical fitness standards and hold a valid ENG1 medical certificate issued by an MCA-approved doctor. This confirms fitness for duties at sea including adequate eyesight, hearing, and physical capability.
Prior Experience Whilst prior maritime experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory for new entrants. The 48-month programme duration accommodates those new to the sector. Applicants with existing sea service or relevant qualifications may be eligible for recognition of prior learning, potentially reducing the training duration.
Other Requirements Applicants should demonstrate genuine interest in a maritime career, strong communication skills, ability to work effectively in a team, and willingness to work at sea in varying conditions including nights, weekends, and extended periods away from home. A basic understanding of health and safety principles is advantageous.
Employers may specify additional requirements based on their operational needs, vessel types, or security clearance requirements for certain roles such as Royal Navy or offshore energy positions.
