Course Overview
This programme is in the process of being withdrawn and will not be offered in 2024/25. It has been replaced by the BSc Nautical Science.
The Foundation Degree in Nautical Science develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for a Merchant Navy career.
Approved by the Merchant Navy Training Board, this three-year programme combines theoretical training with safety training and 12 months’ seagoing time, leading to the award of Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency (CoC).
Regarded as one of the UK’s top nautical institutions, Fleetwood Nautical Campus has strong industry partnerships, which guarantee students excellent employment opportunities.
This programme is only available to students sponsored by a shipping company or cadet training provider due to the work-based learning modules, which should be completed on board ships.

Entry Requirements
Students meeting the following criteria will be offered places on this programme, subject to the availability of places:
- 48 UCAS points at A/AS level, including subjects which support the application
- GCSE grade 9-4 or equivalent in Mathematics Science and English Language
- where English is not the applicant’s first language, a minimum overall CEFR band score of 5.5, with a minimum of 4.0 in each of the following elements, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. achieved within the two years prior to applying for the programme
- other qualifications that are equivalent to the above (normally, the College will review evidence supplied by mature, non-standard applicants regarding their ability to undertake the programme)
- the award of credits via Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) will be assessed on an individual basis
- applicants will need to pass an industry-standard medical examination in order to complete a placement at sea (it is advised that applicants complete this prior to arrival)

Industry Placement and Field Trips
To qualify for the Officer of the Watch Unlimited Certificate of Competency and gain the industrial experience required to complete the work-based learning elements of this course, students are required to achieve a minimum of 12 months' sea-going service, which would normally be provided by a sponsoring shipping company or training provider during phases 2 and 4.
All students attend a cadet development course away from campus, usually at the start of the programme, which aims to build their team-working, communication and leadership skills, and improve their situational awareness and decision-making capabilities.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
You are expected to provide stationery, including: parallel rules and dividers for chartwork, celestial navigation and radar plotting, as well as a scientific calculator.
Having your own laptop is recommended but not essential.
You will be required to wear Merchant Navy uniform and general personal protective equipment, such as safety shoes and boiler suit and this will generally be at your own expense, or as agreed with your sponsor.
