The HND when combined with certain professional qualifications, will entitle successful students to apply to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for a Certificate of Competency; this will allow you to seek employment as a Second Engineer on board merchant vessels.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have completed the HNC in Marine Engineering.

For Second Engineer Certificate of Competency (CoC) you will require a minimum of 18 months' sea-time (12 under new regulations) as a Watchkeeping Officer while holding an STCW95 Officer of The Watch CoC.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The programme is delivered through interactive lectures incorporating short presentations from both tutors and students. Students will be provided with the opportunity to work in groups to critically analyse and solve problems and apply knowledge and understanding to a range of tutor and student defined contexts. Students will have the opportunity to work both independently and with peers in a supervised manner.

Each module has 40 guided learning hours associated to it and students are expected to complete an additional 80 hours' self-study per module.

Students will use practical equipment for the Pneumatics & Hydraulics module as well as the Process Control module. This allows students to put into practice some of the complex theories taught as part of these modules.
