Course Overview

Prepare for a Merchant Navy career or one of a growing number of shore-based opportunities with the AdD in Nautical Science, delivered by blended learning.

Fleetwood Nautical Campus is one of the UK’s top nautical establishments, with graduates enjoying outstanding success rates.

The AdD in Nautical Science, when combined with the required STCW short courses and other MCA requirements, will entitle you to apply for a Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.

It provides the required knowledge, skills and experience for eventual seagoing employment as a Chief Officer in the Merchant Navy.

The AdD is delivered via blended learning, with formative assessments being conducted online.

You will be able to access teaching support from the Mumbai Maritime Training Institute (MMTI), where you will also complete the summative assessments (supervised by B&FC staff).

Afterwards, you will then travel to the UK and attend Fleetwood Nautical Campus for further practical assessments, SQA Preparation, STCW Short Course and MCA Orals Preparation.

Entry Requirements

  • 12 months’ watch-keeping service while holding an OOW (Unlimited) (II/I) Certificate of Competency (see MSN 1856)
  • HNC Nautical Science
  • STCW short courses as required - see MSN 1865 for details and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved countries and centres
  • MCA SQA Navigation and Stability exams
  • MCA Orals

Students who have an MCA approved Unlimited Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency and completed 12 months’ seagoing service as an OOW will also be eligible.

English language requirements

  • If you hold UK Certificate of Competency this will be sufficient evidence of your proficiency in English Language. 
  • If you do not hold a UK COC we will require a copy of your IELTS Certificate - Overall score 5.5 (Academic, General or UKVI).

Career Options and Progression

Achieving the Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency leads to employment as a Chief Officer in the Merchant Navy, responsible for operating and managing commercial ships. A range of shore-based opportunities are also available, in ship management and in areas such as maritime law, ship surveying, and maritime education and training.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The AdD programme is delivered using a blend of learning styles, with assessments being conducted by distance learning as well as in a college environment.

To complete your underpinning knowledge for the AdD, you will need to work through all of the learning material and submit your work for marking on a regular basis.

Throughout this process you will have access to support from staff at both Fleetwood Nautical Campus and the Mumbai Maritime Training Institute.

Notice of Eligibility for the MCA Orals exam must be applied for by the student prior to arrival at Fleetwood for SQA exams and short courses.

There is a cost of £220 (correct as of August 2020) for the Notice of Eligibility.
