Qualify for an exciting career at sea with the HNC Nautical Science, delivered by blended learning. Fleetwood Nautical Campus is one of the UK’s top nautical establishments, with graduates enjoying outstanding success rates. The course, when combined with the required STCW short courses and other MCA requirements, will entitle you to apply for an OOW (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency. It provides the required knowledge, skills and experience for eventual seagoing employment as a Watchkeeping Officer in the Merchant Navy.
The HNC is delivered via blended learning, with practical assessments being conducted online. You will be able to access teaching support from the Mumbai Maritime Training Institute (MMTI), where you will also complete your final assessments (supervised by B&FC staff). Afterwards, you will then travel to the UK and attend Fleetwood Nautical Campus for further practical assessments, SQA Preparation, STCW Short Course and MCA Orals Preparation.

Applicants should hold 5 UK GCSEs at grades 9-4 (previously grades A* to C), or equivalent qualifications, including English Language, Maths and Science.
You should have completed at least 36 months’ sea time, including a minimum of 6 months’ watch-keeping, supported by testimonials issued by the ship’s master, CDC entries and documents issued by company representatives.
If you have less than 36 months’ sea service there is the possibility of enrolling onto the HNC and accruing the required seagoing service after completing your award. This will be at the discretion of the MMTI/Fleetwood Nautical Campus however. Please refer to MSN 1856.
You will also need to have English Language proficiency, equivalent to IELTS Overall Score 5.5 (Academic, General or UKVI).
Please note that before travelling to the UK for your MCA Orals exam, you will need to apply for a Notice of Eligibility, which currently costs £201.
Modules and Assessment
Teaching and Learning Methods
The HNC programme is delivered using a blend of learning styles, with assessments being conducted by distance learning as well as in a college environment.
To complete your underpinning knowledge for the HNC, you will need to work through all of the learning material and submit your work for marking on a regular basis. Throughout this process you will have access to support from staff at both Fleetwood Nautical Campus and the Mumbai Maritime Training Institute.

All staff involved in the delivery of maritime and nautical courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant vocational and industrial experience and professional practice. .
Methods of payment;
The College does not accept cash for payment of deposits or tuition fees. Traveller’s cheques and individual’s foreign cheques are also not accepted. Payments may be made by the following methods only;
- Bankers draft – made payable to Blackpool and The Fylde College
- Bank transfer (bank details provided on request)
- Invoice (if company sponsored – EU learners & EU companies only and by prior agreement)
- Credit / Debit Card
Blended Learning Students
- All students are to pay for Set One modules, SQA Registration and on-line registration at enrolment.
- All International students wishing to enter the UK must meet the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) criteria. We strongly recommend you check that you meet the criteria before applying to enrol onto the course which requires a minimum of 4 visits to the UK.
- It is extremely important to note that the College will not sponsor students for visa purposes. Organisation of obtaining the correct visa remains the sole responsibility for the student and that no fees will be refund for students who enrol onto the course and subsequently cannot enter the UK for any reason.
